In blues & plaids outfits {and post-haircut}

Thursday evening, I got a haircut, as you know. I went for a shorter version of pretty much my usual, so basically a short middy. I had a long talk with my stylist about how I'd style a curl fluff on top, and she cut my hair so that I could do that, albeit with that layer a little longer as she was worried I wouldn't be able to do much with it if that didn't work out for me. Which is good, because wow, was I all thumbs at it when I tried. I'll give it a go again but I'm not holding out any hopes. I think it was a combo of "I'm not doing this successfully" and "this just doesn't look very good on me". Ha!

In the meantime, here's two outfits and post-haircut photos in one. First, I'll show you a hairstyle you will likely not see me in very often. This was styled with sponge rollers the day after my cut.

This turned out to be a don't move, don't go outside, don't go near humidity, don't breath hairstyle. It would be lovely if I lived in the middle of the desert. I don't.

Instead, I live in humid Chicago, and it rained the day I styled this, and within an hour my hair was a complete wreck. Frizz, falling down bits, you name it. Appallingly bad! As soon as I got home from brunch and fun but fruitless second-hand shopping, I had to pile it all up on my head and adorn with a scarf. So much for a chic vintage 'do. On the bright side, the after-style was pretty cute and will be fun and casual for summer. (Sorry, I forgot to photograph it! But you'll see it again, I'm sure.)

Outfit details: Freddie's of Pinewoods jeans, red Bakelite bangles, Bass saddle shoes, 50s wicker basket purse, 50s starburst earrings from Atomixrox, reversible squirrel belt by Cassie Stephens, pullover knit by a friend for a swap on Ravelry (the pattern is Mary Jane)

So here's my hair the next (again rainy) day and much closer to what my hair really looks like, droopy curl included. I'd already had to pin one up to the nape of my neck by this point in the day. This was styled with perm rods, which my hair really is a bit too short for unless I'm just going for a bit of wave at the bottom. But sometimes I like to play with different tools.

Having gone short again I'm still not sure if I like my hair better when the length sits above or below my shoulders. I forgot that when it's this short, any rogue curls and droopy bits are way more obvious, and I do get those. A lot. But I can also leave it mostly un-styled with a little front roll for quick on-the-go days, like when I commute to work and just can't bring myself to set my hair.

The great thing is it's just hair, and by the time I make up my mind, my hair will be different...and I'll have probably changed my mind, anyway. ;)

And last but not least, we're starting to see things bloom in our new yard!

Hope you had a lovely weekend! And hello to all my new followers on Twitter! I'm still getting the hang of it but I think it'll be a fun way to connect with other vintage fans.

  2. My hair is about the same length, why don't you just try curling the ends with a curling iron and then brushing them out, this is what I do and it's super fast.

    1. Unfortunately curling irons never work for me! The curl just won't last. Even though my hair isn't stick straight, it really does its best to resist curls. ;)

    2. That's too bad, your hair looks like mine, I guess the same goes for hot rollers?

    3. Sadly yes. I can only do hot rollers or hot sticks if I do it just before going out in the evening for a short-lived style, never for all day. Although now that it's a good bit shorter, I think I'll give them a try again if the hair at the nape of my neck isn't too short to hold them in. Thanks for the reminder!

    4. Your welcome, I'm always trying to find faster ways of doing my big mop of hair.

    5. Have you ladies tried doing the "curl" with a straight iron or a high heat ceramic curling iron? I have the same issue with standard curling irons. I have thick course hair with natural curl. I find that with a good setting lotion, a bit of anti-frizz oil like Moroccan Oil - I can successfully battle the humidity and hold a solid curl. In Florida. =) Tasha - I'm loving the new cut. I recently cut mine to just past my shoulders and am itching to go shorter now that I've seen yours!

  4. Wow!!! I really love this new hairstyle! I'm always afraid to cut my hair because I don't have time to make pin curls most of the time...

    1. I know the feeling, I often don't have the time or inclination to set my hair, but at least it's still long enough that I can pull it up. And hopefully wrap it around a rat to do a backwards roll on my neck... but we'll see about that one, I have yet to try it!

      Your hair always looks fantastic!

  9. the shorter hair looks great! But I've noticed myself that its much easier to hide those droopy bits when the hair is long enough to rest on the shoulders. Mine has just reached that length and it's a bit of a relief actually! But as long as you can deal with the droopies, the shorter length is really pretty! Love your belt and both outfits :) x

    1. You are absolutely right! And that's a good length for still having some updo options. My hair un-curled rests at my shoulders now, but obviously when curled it's shorter, so those droopies are pretty obvious. I want to see more photos of women in the 40s and 50s with droopy bits! ;)

  12. You have great patience to style your hair every day like that. I just don't have the time or want! It always looks great though and I think you will get more used to it in a week or so :)

    1. Oh no, I don't do it everyday, usually I can't be bothered if I'm working from home, which is half the week! ;)

  13. I LUV this hairstyle on you! The length is very flattering. I would love to go this short but I'm afraid my face is just too fat.

  14. Great cut! Everytime I cut my hair I need to get some time to get used to it. My hair is about the same length - my tip is to use smaller rollers on the bottom as tighter curls won't droop as much. At least, that's what works for me!

  15. I love your hair, it looks great. You have a great sense of style and a wonderful selection of bangles.

  16. Both of your outfits are so, so delightfully fun (and adorable - hello, squirrel buckle, if that doesn't epitomize cuteness, I don't know what does! :) ).

I love your new hair, too - awesome length and layering. You are beyond fortunate to have a stylist who is able to give you a vintage appropriate cut.

Wishing you a marvelous Monday & week ahead,
    Jessica

  17. I suddenly need a squirrel belt.

  18. I love your cut! Both styling are great, but the second one is especially smart on you. It makes me feel a bit more inspired about my own hair, which suddenly feels too short. It's a good reminder of how cute shoulder/chin length hair can be when set/curled.

    1. Thanks Moe! I've been having trouble styling it, I think I just need to relax about how it looks. I tried hot rollers this morning (working from home--don't get me wrong, I spend 2 minutes getting ready when I commute, lol). The curl is more casual and fancy free but still looks somewhat decent. And the nice thing is that even if I just leave it straight I can still do a little roll with my bangs and it adds a bit of retro.

  19. Too bad that first one didn't hold. I think it is lovely and looks very good on you. Though I like the second one too. I think this short haircut suits you very well.

  20. I like the shorter haircut on you :) I've just been so uninspired to set my hair lately (plus I've not left the house much) which is why I've gravitated toward the 60s hehe. But I used to get a lot of droops curls & one bit that just wouldn't set! Haha

  23. Hi Tasha!! Bellísima!!!

Your new look is very cute!!! ♥ My hair is very long and I'm thinking of cutting it, too. In Galicia (Spain) the climate is very humid and it's always raining,I hate it. Sorry if my English is not very correct.

    kisses from Spain :)

  24. Your new haircut looks great! I really like it. It should be perfect for the hot and humid summer that is around the corner. It's always so exciting whenever see a bloom in our garden. It makes it feels like Spring is actually here.

  25. I think your new cut looks super cute, and I feel your pain on the humidity front. I used to live in the south and my hair would do the exact same thing.....uggghhhh.....now that I live in Arizona I admit I have gotten a bit spoiled! :)

  26. Your cut looks just great! I appreciate what you mean about maintaining a style outside, try living in Scotland haha! Have fun trying more things with it, have you tried hot sticks? They are my favourite but with long hair only ever curl the ends so I am hoping with my new short hair it will do a swell job! :) Zoë x

  28. You're hair is so cute! I really like the way you did it with the perm rods - when I do that, i end up with an afro!
And your cowboy shirt is to die for :)

  29. You are always so put together! With those cute sweaters and cowboy shirts - who's paying attention to a few droopy curls?! And I am loving the shorter style; although I'm guessing women of the era spent a whole lot more time at it than we can afford now. Not to mention, permanents and dryer hoods.
Chicago has to be the winner for city with the most hair destroying weather! I always feel like a complete disaster when I'm there!

  31. I love your hair cut...and totally appreciate your patience in styling. I am sooo slap-in-a-bumpit-and-go, it's not even funny. And I have a phobia of cutting my hair so any cute retro 50's do's are out for me. So I'll just have to live vicariously thru your hair stylings. Love the belt ;) ...Cassie
