An autumnal outfit

One thing I have been downright terrible about this year is outfit posts. I really need to be better, in part because it gives me an excuse to wear something on days I don't otherwise have a reason to force me out of casual jeans and a sweater. So here you go, a little outfit post, inspired by yesterday's post.

This is one of my favorite skirts. In fact, it was in part re-discovering this skirt in my closet that sent me cooing over skirts, blouses and trim little cardigans. Actually this cardigan is my single entry in the 'trim little cardigan' department, believe it or not. But I'm working on that, here's one of the ways...

I'll be knitting up a cardigan with two strands of fingering weight in a yummy color for fall, which coincidentally matches my skirt. And back to that skirt. It's the perfect fit, the perfect length and a fabulous print. Aztec? Or inspired by ancient Rome? Who knows. Boy did they do novelty prints right back in the day.

The skirt is pleated all along the waistband and I have a vintage sewing pattern exactly like it, which I sewed up into a novelty print skirt that I wore to Viva Las Vegas last year. I was disappointed with how that skirt looked in photos so much I've never worn it since, but now I think I can chalk it up to a bad bra and belt choice, believe it or not. Amazing how simple things can make such a difference! And now I totally want to sew up that skirt pattern again.

You can't tell how craptastic my hair is looking lately. Grow or cut? I can't seem to decide. So I've been wearing a casual ponytail a lot, but it's now warm hat season here, and the two don't mix. I'm tempted to cut it short enough that I don't have to bother setting it when I don't want to, but fear I'll regret it.

Yes, it's warm footwear season as well.

These booties were purchased last year when I was desperately trying to find non-ugly early winter boots. I think they're pretty darling, though the warmth is mostly just for show—the faux shearling is only on the outside. My feet get cold easily and sadly I know we'll soon be sinking into the season where I'll be wearing mostly fugly-but-toasty sheepy boots. Although inspiration just struck: I think I should knit some warm ankle socks to hide inside these!

Ah, the joys of a Midwest winter. At least I can look cute on top!

Outfit details: 50s skirt from Knee Deep Vintage, cardigan from Simple Thrift, acorn charm bracelet from eBay, blouse and belt from somewhere or other, me-made earrings from vintage cabochons, Sam Edelman boots

  2. You look adorable and that skirt is gorgeous. To me it looks more Roman than Aztec. That other skirt is beautiful. You should definitely wear it again. I'm a stickler for making an outfit match. I don't feel right if the outfit looks off to me.

  3. I love those shoes! I'm glad to see the return of the outfit posts too. I really enjoy seeing them and they are always very inspiring. I know what you mean about discovering you actually like an item of clothing that you had previously sworn off though. I am actually wearing a dress today that I had initially hated upon completing and swore Id only wear it to clean the house. I put it on today and I think it may be one of my new favorites! You just never know sometimes. It can be all in the styling, as you say.

  7. Tasha,
You always make everything look so good, beautiful outfit. I think your hair is gorgeous long, but if you feel the need to cut it short, I think it will work well, you can certainly wear any hairstyle. I am letting my hair grow, just because I like long hair, styling my hair in braids like Frida Kahlo would wear, minus the flowers, very 1930s 1940s or in a bun style helps me deal with the length. Sometimes I find myself stepping out of my comfort zone for just a little while, and try new things with my hair, finding the experience to be a whole lot of fun. I am still debating on bleaching a strand of my hair(the bangs) in color blond, don't know yet if I'll do it.

    1. Thanks Jacqueline! I love Frida's style on girls with thick hair! I've tried it when my hair was longer and it doesn't have enough oomph to carry it off. You should try the streak, color is so much fun to play with and so easy to change. :)

  8. Cute outfit! I hope to see more outfit posts in the future. I need winter inspiration. I always give up vintage during the winter and stick to jeans and tee shirts but a new job requires a winter wardrobe upgrade.

  9. I think you hair looks great and I love that skirt. You are right, novelty prints have never been better than in the 1950's. Anyways, I guess with hair you can always let it grow if you regret cutting it... I'd love to see some pictures of how you were thinking of cutting it or how you're planning on styling it when it gets longer, perhaps an inspiration post?

  12. Hi, cute boots. Have you tried rockn socks http://www.rocknsocks.com/ I bought a lot of wool/coton warm over the knee socks from this web site. And I also got some wonderful knee highs from the web site sock dreams http://www.sockdreams.com/_pages/index.php too. These are my favorite fun places to buy warm socks that are never ugly. Plus I am a sock addict.

  13. Everything about this outfit is so darling! I love the delicacy of the embellished cardigan partnered with the sturdy winter boots and dark tights. Gorgeous look from head (terrific ponytail and rolled bangs style!) to autumn weather protected toe.

    1. Thanks! The yarn is Wollmeise, a German hand-dyed fingering weight. I think the color will be a nice versatile one to go with many things!

It was fun to look back to your Viva pix...I missed them when you posted them. Such cute outfits on both of you!
I really need to do some outfit posts to bump me out of the pathetic yoga-pants-and-hoodie thing I've been in lately...thanks for the inspiration.
And btw, your hair looks cute :-)

    1. Yes, it's my attempt to bump myself out of jeans and the same boring shirt and sweater all the time when I'm home, and working from home a few days a week...that's a lot. ;)

  16. What a lovely outfit, and that cardigan is so adorable!!! I love the boots with the outfit too - I am frustrated that whenever I try to pair my furry winter boots with a skirt, I just feel that it doesn't look right...although every time I see someone else do the vintage skirt/boots combo, it looks great! Bah!

  17. GAH! I love that print of the skirt, the booties, and the delicious color of yarn you are using there :) Your cardi is going to be magnificent, I'm sure!
